Differential Susceptibility:
Designing your life and environment for positive outcomes
A Webinar and Discussion with Alane Freund, MS, MA, LMFT, ICHS.Â
Sunday, August 10th at 11:30 am US Pacific | 2:30 pm Eastern
Followed by a group discussion at 1:00 pm US Pacific | 4:00 pm Eastern
Highly sensitive people often wonder:
~ Why does the world affect me so deeply—both the pain and the beauty?
~ Why do I thrive in some environments and struggle in others?
The answer lies in a powerful concept from the science of sensitivity:
Differential Susceptibility.
- Once you register, you will have access to the webinar, Differential Susceptibility (DS): Designing Your Life and Environment for Positive Outcomes. We will send you the link and you can watch it any time.
- OR, you could wait until Sunday, August 10th at 2:30 pm Eastern and watch it live in community with the chat open. We will be broadcasting it live on Zoom.
- AND THEN, we hope you will join us for our live, online DS Discussion Group as part of HSP Tools and Topics hosted by Alane Freund. We’ll take questions, brainstorm MORE tools, and support one another. As always, you are invited to have your mic and video turned off the whole time if that is most comfortable for you. Some people like to just observe or participate in the chat. We welcome all manners of participation.

Differential Susceptibility means highly sensitive people are differently “susceptible” to our environments. Since we have more reactive brains, we are deeply processing everything in our environment from people to sensory input to emotions. All that processing (thinking and feeling) impacts highly sensitive people more than those without the trait. The key is that we are strongly impacted by both the good and the bad, so it’s really important that we protect our environment so we get lots of GOOD things in our environment.
In this essential webinar, we’ll explore:
- What Differential Susceptibility means and how it applies to HSPs
- Why HSPs are more influenced by both negative and positive environments
- How this research explains your past and empowers your future
- The role of self-compassion in managing high sensitivity
- Tools to help you create the kind of environment you flourish in

Differential Susceptibility is a game-changing idea for HSPs. It helps us understand that our heightened responsiveness isn’t a weakness—it's a trait that magnifies outcomes based on our surroundings.
That means with the right support, community, and insight, HSPs can thrive beyond what’s typical. But first, we must understand why our sensitivity works the way it does.
This webinar is your opportunity to ground your experience in science, compassion, and practical tools.
A finely tuned nervous system and highly reactive brain are both trademarks of HSPs who thrive best in “good” environments. Brain reactivity means HSPs process deeply, have strong emotional responses, and become easily overwhelmed in a world that is not designed for their sensitive brains and hearts.
Strongly impacted by their environment and the people in it, HSPs are very susceptible to and impacted by positive interventions. We will explore the highly sensitive person’s tremendous capacity for thriving.Â
