All the Tools You Need to Raise Resilient Youth
Â
80% of Americans reported increased stress and anxiety during the pandemic, and the numbers have not dropped as much as you would think, especially for sensitive people. As many as a quarter of Americans may qualify for an actual diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder, and sadly, sensitive youth (and adults) make up a large percentage of that number.
Â
Is it instinct or culture that tells today's parents to take care of things for their children? Life is so challenging for sensitive children and teens that we want to protect and shelter them even more.
Â
Are we serving our sensitive or anxious children when we are so very careful not to upset them? Where should we draw a line in the sand? One parent says "straighten up and fly right!" and another parent protects that same child, making sure the world doesn't overwhelm them...WHO IS RIGHT?
Current research tells us that parents underestimate their teens’ stress level as compared to youth self report, and tweens are proving themselves to be less effective at navigating the world than anytime in history. So how do we support the strengths of our youth while also honoring their challenges? How do we raise resilient youth?
The 10 Pillars for Resilience are a guide to help families support resilience in sensitive–AND ALL–youth.
Here's your guide.⬇
Maybe you will take a look at the 10 Pillars and feel great... Your child has them mostly in place. But many of you will feel immediately overwhelmed or you will begin to feel bereft that you haven't done it perfectly.
Most of us need help, we need a faculty (or staff) to be our co-parenting village. If that sounds right to you, scroll on down to read about how I might be of assistance. From masterclasses to office hours to a resilience assessment (one-on-one coaching session with me to develop a family resilience plan) I would absolutely LOVE to support you and your youth. We were never meant to do this alone.Â
In this masterclass, Alane will teach her 10 Pillars of Resilience for Raising Sensitive Youth. They are remarkably familiar and simple, and you can never start too early, but tomorrow is too late. Today is the day to implement resilience in your kids.Â

The Struggle is Real for Highly Sensitive People of All Ages
Maybe you’ve noticed that you or your sensitive family member is NOT FUN on NOT ENOUGH SLEEP.
Highly sensitive adults and youth are more sensitive to blood sugar fluctuations. We need a very balanced diet with almost no caffeine or sugar.
Once HSPs get run down or stressed out, we are more likely to become ill or injured. However...
Your Sensitivity is a Gift!
You think deeply about things.
You come up with solutions to problems big and small.
You appreciate beauty and feel exquisite empathy for others, including animals and the planet.
Sensitive youth and adults all need plenty of fresh air, exercise, sleep, nutritious frequent meals, and DOWN TIME.
When you get too stressed out or anxious or overwhelmed, you can’t find your own answers.
Too Much – Too Overwhelmed – Too Perfectionist
Are you just TOO DAMN SENSITIVE?
NO!
Your Sensitivity is your Superpower!
Community is important and so is learning about high sensitivity.

YOU ARE NOT TOO MUCH!
2 Strategies in Over 100 Species
There are two strategies for how people (and animals) behave in the world (research by Wolf et al, 2009):
Do it right and do it once.
Responsive, reflective, reactive, sensitive
VS
Go for it; if wrong, go for it again.
Nonresponsive, impulsive, low reactivity, not sensitive
 Â
Highly sensitive people and youth are the first group.
We are careful and deliberate about our actions.
We can advise the more impulsive majority and guide the community or the culture to wise action. AND guess what?
All that crying or worrying… it’s called EMOTIONAL LEADERSHIP.
HSPs are also canaries. When the sensitive child is becoming overtired or overstimulated, it’s likely true that the rest of the children in the family or classroom will soon follow.
More time, more sleep, more time in nature, more frequent healthy meals, all of these things that help sensitive children thrive are actually good for all people.
At Are You Highly Sensitive, we create community and education to help HSPs embrace sensitive leadership.

"I really enjoy working with Alane Freund. She is so approachable and easy to talk to, plus she is highly knowledgeable about Highly Sensitive People. I have learned so much from her workshops. She makes me feel known and far less alien than I tend to feel in a world full of people who are not sensitive and don't get HSPs. "
- S. Smith
